How to: Make your Curls Last

22 Feb

The key is in the angle of the curling iron!

Here is what I used to do:

I would start from the bottom and curl my hair underneath itself. These curls wouldn’t hold for long because the weight of your own hair pulls the curl out. You’re curling your hair in an unnatural shape when you hold the iron this way.

Now here’s how I make curls last a full night:

Take your arm up and over your head so that the iron forms a natural curl shape in your hair. This way your curls will stay in form for much longer!

Start from the top and curl hair around the iron until you reach the bottom.

Leave the clamp open to avoid any crinkly lines in your hair.

Once you’ve held your hair in the roller for 10-15 seconds unravel it in your hand and hold it in place for another 2-3 seconds – this really helps set the curl!

Notice the difference? The properly curled hair is on the right.

My final piece of advice here is use really good hairspray. I use kerastase double force hairspray and a 1-inch curling iron from Conair – invest in the hairspray over the iron.

Happy curling!

Inside My Dream Gym Bag

15 Feb

Gym accessories have stepped up a lot in the past decade. Gone are the sweatpants and XL cotton t-shirts. I’ve complied a list of 10 amazing gym accessories, some that I already have and some that one day would be great to have.

1. M0851 Gym Bag, $540
This is a wish bag! I have two clients with this bag and the leather is so soft it makes you just want to sit and pat it. At this steep price tag it’s a little out of the realm of reasonable – but they are a great Canadian business success story so nice to support them.

2. Yogamatics Personalized Mat, $89
Great gift for the yogi who has everything. Jennifer Aniston made one for Oprah with a picture of her dogs on it! Such a great idea!

3. Hermes Scarf, $380
I have a client who always comes into our workouts with one on and she just looks so perfectly cool. H&M makes more reasonably priced options … but this is still my dream bag post.

4. Water Bobble, $9.99
Not your average water bottle. This bobble is a stylish, reusable bottle that filters tap water as you drink, using a replaceable carbon filter.

5. Timex Heart Rate Watch, $89.99
This is so cool! My Dad and I bought matching ones at the Can Fit Pro Expo and they are really neat. You don’t need to wear a monitor, this watch will pull a pulse directly off your wrist.

6. Alex and Isabelle Bow Hair Ties, $4
Super cute hair ties that have a strong hold and they won’t snag your hair.

7. Lululemon Scuba Hoodie, $108
I live in mine. Very comfortable and perfect for traveling to and from places.

8. Stella McCartney for Adidas Top, $65
I love this top and just might be purchasing it for Bod Squad! Stella McCartney for Adidas is a great place to find original gym wear – I love lulu but so does 98% of the female population now at the gym.

9. Asics GEL-Noosa Tri, $120
Yes funky looking but also no socks required!

10. Beats Headphones, $175.95
Better not lose these if you have them! For real music aficionados these are apparently they are life changing.

Floating Vase: Condo Beauty

13 Feb

My boyfriend and I live in 515 square feet.

Let’s just say it’s a great relationship tester – you really get to know everything about eachother quickly! We don’t have a lot of space to decorate so I really like things that hang and are out of the way.

I love flowers. I spent three summers working at Foliage Fetish, an upscale garden company in Toronto. Our average summer flower budget was anywhere from $10,000 – $75,000! My appreciation and understanding of how to care for them really developed there.

When I found this floating vase (click here for tutorial) on a blog that I’m in love with – cupcakes and cashmere I was so excited to make it! It’s perfect for small spaces!

Here’s what I did:

Went to Home Depot and bought wood (10″ x 8″ x 1/2″), steel wire (a wire hanger would probably work too), white matte paint, and a paint brush.

I borrowed my boyfriend’s drill and carefully drilled 4 holes into the wood.I painted the wood white and attached the wire around a well washed jar of honey.Attached the wire around the top holes and hung from our wall! Ta da!

Tips on Tulips:

Cut the stems on an angle under cold running water. This way they will absorb more water and look healthy longer.

Put ice cubes into cold water – tulips will stay closed and last about three days longer than without ice.

Don’t change tulip water – they are too temperamental.

Top 12 Beauty Favourites

————————————————————————————————————————————–

1. NARS Blush – Luster: For anyone who is naturally red (me) this is the perfect blush. It’s a soft apricot colour which looks luminous and not rosy.
2. Amazing Costmetics Concealer: This provides the best coverage possible. When I was going through my terrible time with acne I used this everyday. Be careful not to use too much; a little goes a long way.
3. Old Spice Deodorant: Yes, I use men’s deodorant. It works better and I think it smells better! I’ve actually been complemented by men that I smell nice when I’m just wearing this!
4. Go Blonder: Hands down this changed my life as a blonde. My hair was starting to get mousy blonde and I was seriously considering dying my hair for the first time but then I spotted this! It really works. You just have to spray it in and blowdry your hair. You will notice a big difference after a week.
5. Cetaphil: Old faithful. Best face wash ever.
6. Jo Malone – Pomegranate Noir: I love this scent! It’s not too fruity and it has a really rich textured smell.
7. Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer: This is the perfect tinted moisturizer. It provides coverage just like a foundation but it isn’t heavy on the skin.
8. NARS Illuminator – Laguna: I use this instead of a bronzing powder now and I think it looks more natural.
9. Moroccan Oil: This leaves your hair feeling super soft and helps control frizzes. I’ve also tried the less expensive version Argan Oil but I wasn’t wowed.
10. Aveeno Daily Moisturizer: As a personal trainer I am around sweat a lot and therefore I shower at least twice a day. Aveeno is a skin saver. I love this body cream! It’s the perfect fix for winter skin.
11. Clarisonic: This is a giant tooth brush for your face. I use mine once or twice a week (daily is too much for me) and my skin feels soft as a baby’s bottom after.
12. Metrogel: This is a prescription gel. If you suffer from rosacea this will be a lifesaver. It was my miracle gel. You need a tiny bit but it will go a long way toward eliminating redness.

After years of research I think I’ve nailed down some great places to get workout clothes in Toronto.

1. One Hot Tamale

I can’t believe I’m giving away my top store secret here – this place is a little gem.

I get tons of compliments on their unique designs. I love their tops, very fun bright colours with great style to their cuts.

I have the shirt pictured here and love wearing it with my bright pink spandex pants! Woooo hoooo fitness!!

2. Joe Fresh

The prices at Joe Fresh are unbeatable and their active stuff is super cute!

It’s great to have some workout options that don’t break the bank. Especially if you’re doing the majority of your workouts outside with the Bod Squad!

Located at Loblaws SuperCentres across Canada.

3. The Gap

Like Joe Fresh, really reasonable pricing – especially on sale! I like Gap’s active section because it’s dressed up basics.

Their lounge wear is also incredibly soft for a post workout option!

4. Sporting Life

This Toronto activewear giant has been around forever! My sister Lindsay used to work here actually!

I love Sporting Life because you know it will have what you’re looking for. There’s free parking and generally the people are pretty helpful.

In the summer they have great shoe sales that are good to watch out for!

Also, the annual Sporting Life 10k is my favourite Toronto race!

5. Lululemon

I can’t do a Toronto activewear post without including Lululemon. Talk about a great Canadian success story!

I love their clothing, it is basically my uniform.

Also, gentlemen please note this is a picture of Tom Brady wearing Lulus … if he can do it so can you!
